Dog skin conditions?

I have a rottweiler and she has a lot of dandruff flakes(so i assume) and her skin is very dry and on some parts of her body her hair is thinning out a lot. Is this from the winter? Or can this be something else?

My Rottie had the same problem. They are prone to dry skin. Try bathing her with oatmeal shampoo. You can find it at any pet store. It worked wonders for mine. Now he is flake free and also has a healthy shiny coat. If that does not help you may want to take her to the vet to make sure she does not have any skin allergies.
Reply:It's likely from the dry weather of winter, added to shedding for spring.


Give her some Omega 3 oil, it'll help with her dryness.
Reply:My family went through that very same thing last year with one of our beagles. After taking her to the vet, we were told she had allergies. They put her on allergy meds, still no cure. The doubled the dose, and still the same reaction. In the meantime her hair was almost gone in several areas. I didn't know what to do, and neither did the vet. I began to do a lot of research and found that this can be caused by hot spots. I went to the local pet shop and bot medicine for hot spots in dogs which you rub in the infected area 4 times a day. In the very bad areas, I would even pour it on rather thick. Now your dogs is not going to like this very much, but in the end it worked. The redness and flaky skin went away, and my dog was back to herself in just a couple of weeks.
Reply:Could be a variety of things. She could be blowing her coat or just shedding. Or could possibly be mange. If she has just spots on her coat that are thinning out. Especially on the face, around the eyes and front legs.





Get her into the vet and if what he see looks suspicious enough he will do a skin scraping on her to rule out mange. Either way he can recommend a diet change or supplements to help with her dry skin if that is just the issue. Good luck!!
Reply:I have this problem with my terrier mix. She has skin allergies. Hers are pretty severe, she gets steroid shots to control it. She lost all the hair on her chest befor efinally trying the shots.


We tried pills, creams, shampoos, hot spot treatment, everything.


She also ha a thyroid problem.


If it continues to get worse, see a vet. It could be normal shedding. But if it chews on itself too much and acts like its itching all the time, the places where it chews could get infected.
