hi , my 16 month old baby has been suffering for about 5months from really dry skin, he gets it a lot over his cheeks and chin that appear bumpy red and sore looking also he gets big patches slightly bigger than 50p size around the back of shoulder and upper back, again these are sore looking red and very scaly. My health visitor looked at him and said he had bad dry skin and i need to bath him every night with oilatum and rub in vaseline on his face., and when it runs out get another prescription. Has he got eczema or something as she never mentioned it but y do i need to go back?

Reply:You should take him to a dermatologist to have a specialist determine what's going on.
Reply:it may be eczema or even rosacea ,but i would deter from using vaseline it doesn't allow the skin to breathe .i would actually talk to a pharmacist they are more aware sometimes about medicines that may work .maybe a hydrocortisone cream allowing skin to breathe and releieve irritation.good luck and i hope this helps.
Reply:Please take him to see a pediatric dermatologist.
They will usually suggest something like Vanacream or Vaseline as a moisturizer in addition to a topical steriod to break the itch-scratch cycle.
However, while these will help on the outside, please also consider treating the eczema from within. The typical American diet is low in Omega 3 fatty acids. The single best source is all natural flax seed. I've written an article on this subject if you would like more details.
